AFTER A COUPLE of months of denying or avoiding the subject, golfer Tiger Woods and skier Lindsey Vonn have confirmed that they are indeed dating.
It's hard to find any warmth and fuzziness about Woods being in a relationship - after cheating on his wife of 5 years with numerous women - but maybe he's a changed man. And you have to admit, the couple is intriguing. Having two world-class athletes, both at the top of their profession, dating each other is not an everyday occurrence.
About the closest one can come to that status is Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi, who began dating in 1999, soon after both won the French Open. They were married in October 2001.
Tennis great Chris Evert married golfer Greg Norman, but that came after both were past their athletic prime. Although a Chris Evert-Jimmy Connors union would have been interesting had that relationship lasted.
Soccer great Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra married in 2003, just prior to Hamm retiring and just before Garciaparra was traded from the Red Sox to the Dodgers.
And Jennie Finch, the star softball player, married minor league pitcher Casey Daigle. It seems Daigle's taste in women far exceeds his baseball prowess.
Candace Parker, one of the best female basketball players on the planet, is married to former Duke star and NBA journeyman Shelden Williams. One out of two isn't too bad.
And Ann Meyers, the first woman to be invited to an NBA tryout, was married to baseball great Don Drysdale until his untimely death in 1993. At the time of their marriage, neither was an active athlete.
So, Lindsey, just a word of advice: When Tiger gets a call at 3 a.m., don't believe him if he tells you it's his insurance agent Todd from Allstate.
